The Huntington is comprised of three distinct centerpieces: The Library, featuring rare British and American books and manuscripts; The Art Collections, houses six million items in four separate galleries including 18th and 19th-century English and French art; and The Botanical Gardens, spans 120 acres of picturesque park-like setting of more than a dozen themed gardens.
The Library is a scholar’s paradise as one of the largest and most comprehensive research centers in the United States segmented by areas of expertise. Works displayed in permanent exhibition include: “Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, a copy of the Gutenberg Bible on vellum, and an unsurpassed collection of the early editions of Shakespeare's works.”
The Art Collections galleries are exquisite. The Huntington Art Gallery and the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art display paintings, sculpture and decorative arts that are highly regarded throughout the world. From European paintings such as Thomas Gainsborough’s Blue Boy to French sculptures and tapestries to American Art ranging from the 1690s to the 1950s, The Huntington’s artwork is nothing short of majestic and a sight to behold.
The Botanical Gardens, covering 120 landscaped acres that are open to visitors, prides itself on showcasing more than 14,000 varieties of plants in its gardens. The Huntington offers FREE days on the first day of every month, though you will need to order your free entrance ticket in advance by calling (800) 838-3006. Arrival times for free days at The Huntington are either in the morning at 10:30am or in the afternoon at 1:30pm.
