Los Angeles 411: Star Eco Station, Culver City
Named the “best place to see animals” by Parent Magazine and the “best teaching zoo”by L.A. Family Magazine, Star Eco Station in Culver City provides an intimate wildlife environment in which children can engage in hands-on activities that help broaden their understanding about protecting endangered species and the environment. An environmental science museum, an exotic wildlife rescue center, and a haven for endangered and illegally-trafficked exotic animals confiscated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the STAR Eco Station is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating children about how to save the planet by making small changes at home and at school.
Unlike a zoo where visitors may wander the grounds at their leisure, the Star Eco Station provides only guided tours of the exhibits for the safety of both the visitors and the animals. Titles of the exhibits shown at the Star Eco Station include: Oceania, US Fish and Wildlife, Reptile Kingdom, and Bird Paradise. Tours are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis; reservations can be made to ensure your spot. Guided public tours begin every hour Friday from 1pm-4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm. Tickets for the public tours are $8 for adults and $6 for children.
Tours in the form of field trips are also offered for schools, which are comprised of a one-hour hands-on workshop and a one-hour tour of the facility. Note: all field trip tours are designed according to California's state standards. Field trips are offered throughout the year Monday through Friday, between 10am and 4pm. On field trips students will be able to see tortoises, pythons, alligators, parrots, arachnids, lizards, and maybe even a small mammal.
In addition to tours, Star Eco Station also offers mobile exhibits and camps throughout the year. Mobile exhibits are offered in the same themes and are perfect for assemblies, workshops and GATE classes. Currently Star Eco Station provides environmental education outreach programs to over 40 California school districts. Voted “best camps” by L.A. Parent Magazine for six years in a row, Star Eco Station provides camps in one week intervals whenever there is a school break. These educational enrichment day camps are offered in the Winter, Spring or Fall. The winter STAR camp for the 2013-14 Winter season runs from December 10 through January 10. Star Eco Station is located at 10101 Jefferson Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232. For more information on tours, please call our office at 310-842-8060.
