“Los Angeles 411”The history of the Wilshire Boulevard Brown Derby Café in Los Angeles, California

The Wilshire Boulevard Brown Derby Café opened in 1926 and is the original Brown Derby restaurant. It is famous because of its unique dome shape that resembled a gentlemen’s derby hat.

Architecture such as the Derby Café was popular at the time it was built. The structure itself was inspired by New York’s Governor Al Smith’s Derby hat.

The small café became so popular because of its location, that they opened many other restaurants. These added restaurants were part of Hollywood’s history as well.

The Brown Derby Café was moved in 1937. In 1975 it was sold and renovated. In 1980 the building was turned into a shopping center known as the Brown Derby Plaza.

Today, it is now the site of a Korean mini-mall!
